The Isle of Arran is easier to reach than most people expect — and the journey is half the adventure.
The Isle of Arran lies 14 miles off the west coast of Scotland, warmed by the Gulf Stream and cradled from the full force of the Atlantic by the Mull of Kintyre. With mountains rising to almost 3,000 feet straight from the sea, Arran has long been called "Scotland in miniature".
The island is easily reached by car ferry — either via the short crossing from Kintyre into Lochranza to the north, or via the main ferries from Ardrossan and Troon Harbours on Scotland's Ayrshire coast into Brodick.
Ardrossan and Troon are just an hour or so's drive — or a direct train journey — from Glasgow. From the ferry terminal at Brodick, Woodside Cottage is approximately 20 minutes' drive north along the coast road.
Drive to Ardrossan or Troon Harbour, Ayrshire (around 1 hour from Glasgow)
CalMac ferry to Brodick — approximately 1 hour from either port
From Brodick, take the A841 coast road north for approximately 20 minutes
We are located in the heart of Glen Sannox
Booking the ferry in advance is essential, especially during summer. Check the CalMac website to see which port is operating on your travel date.
Frequent ScotRail services run from Glasgow Central to both Ardrossan Harbour and Troon stations
From Ardrossan Harbour, the terminal is a short walk from the platform
From Troon, a dedicated shuttle bus usually connects the station to the ferry terminal
Once in Brodick, take a local taxi or the island bus (northbound) to Glen Sannox
A relaxing, car-free option. We recommend checking the CalMac website for which port is operating on your date.
Glasgow International: approximately 1 hour by hire car or taxi to the ferry terminals
Glasgow Prestwick: direct train links to Ardrossan Harbour (~45 mins)
Both airports offer straightforward links to the Arran ferry departures
